How to Discover Your Teaching Values
So- how do we figure out what our values are as a teacher? Take a look at the list below (and feel free to add to it). Choose 3-5 things that are NON-NEGOTIABLES when it comes to the school you work at. Those are your teacher school values.
- Strong leadership
- Chill/relaxed leadership
- Silly leadership
- Strong family involvement
- Strong community presence
- Focus on inclusion
- Focus on social justice
- Access to plentiful resources
- Access to plentiful curriculums
- Instuctional coaches
- Team atmosphere
- “We are here for the kids” mentality
- “We do what’s best for kids” mentality
- Distance to home
- Large grade-level teams
- Samller grade-level teams
- Positive reinforcement behavior management strageties
- Trauma informed practices
- Restorative practices
- And the list could go on and on!
Use the list above to help guide you. Once you’ve chosen your 3-5, look for those things to be present in the school you are hoping to teach at. Is it in their mission statement? On the website? Do they bring it up in interviews? Look to see and hear it in several places.
Why is this step so important? Teaching is hard. And you deserve to find a good fit school where your values align with the schools. This will make your life so much easier, and your job more fulfilling for you.
